A metabarcoding tool to detect predation of the honeybee Apis mellifera and other wild insects by the invasive Vespa velutina

چکیده
The invasive Vespa velutina has been widely referred as an effective predator of honeybees. Despite the potential risk to pollination services provision and honey production, there is no accurate quantification assessment its real consequences for To date, identification honeybee other insects in diet V. investigated by direct observation adult foraging or examination food pellets. overcome these limitations, this study we used a DNA metabarcoding approach evaluate usefulness different types sample (jaws stomachs collected from workers larval faecal pellets taken hornet comb) investigate predation upon honeybees, potentially on insects. Honeybee was identified all samples, but retrieved higher number reads largest diversity at taxonomic levels. Over samples could identify 4 orders, 9 families, 6 genera 1 species prey. We estimate that collecting sufficient colony using worker’s jaws. Stomachs were least useful type detect DNA. presence analysed colonies irrespective collection site, variety insect orders detected support current concerns over acknowledged negative impact managed honeybees threat provision.

Is Apis mellifera more sensitive to insecticides than other insects?
BACKGROUND Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) are among the most important pollinators in natural and agricultural settings. They commonly encounter insecticides, and the effects of insecticides on honey bees have been frequently noted. It has been suggested that honey bees may be (as a species) uniquely sensitive to insecticides, although no comparative toxicology study has been undertaken to exam...
متن کاملThermal learning in the honeybee, Apis mellifera.
Honeybee foragers are exposed to thermal stimuli when collecting food outside and receiving food rewards inside the nest. In both contexts, there is an opportunity for foragers to associate warmth with food rewards. However, honeybee thermal learning is poorly understood. Using an associative learning paradigm (the proboscis extension reflex), we show that honeybees can learn to associate a nec...
متن کاملDiscrimination of single bars by the honeybee (Apis mellifera)
The bees learn to come for a reward to a very simple pattern, a black bar in a fixed position on a white background, in a Y-choice apparatus, with the targets presented in the vertical plane at a fixed range. They were trained on a number of different arrangements of a single bar on one or both targets. The trained bees were then given appropriate tests to discover what cues they had learned. A...
متن کاملOlfactory Attraction of the Hornet Vespa velutina to Honeybee Colony Odors and Pheromones
Since the beginning of the last century, the number of biological invasions has continuously increased worldwide. Due to their environmental and economical consequences, invasive species are now a major concern. Social wasps are particularly efficient invaders because of their distinctive biology and behavior. Among them, the yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina, is a keen hunter of domestic ho...
